Recyclamations!

I refer to my sculptures as Recyclamations because they are made mostly of recycled materials and because somehow, they always end up with a cartoonish quality to them - even when I attempt to make them serious! As a child, I loved all of the Claymation animated films so the name for my work seemed to fit.

THE NAME
All of the sculptures start out with an armature created from plastic bottles, cans, scrap wood and anything else that is lying around. Balls of newspaper, duct tape, recycled fabric and newspaper clay build up the detail. The final coat is a mixture of acrylic modeling paste and gel medium to smooth out surfaces and allow for fine details such as scales or fur. Acrylic paint and varnish finish out the sculpture.
WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?
THE IDEA
I have been designing props for the theatre since my college days and have used techniques I have learned and applied it to my fine arts work. There is also a certain satisfaction in using things that would normally be thrown away and turning them into pieces of art that can be enjoyed for years to come.
THE INSPIRATION
CUSTOM WORK AVAILABLE

I made my first gargoyle sculpture back in the early '90's while on tour with Sesame Street Live. I was working as a prop master and was bored one day between shows and decided to make a mascot for my road crate. Seymore was born. I guess being surrounded by life-size muppets messes with your mind after a while. I have played with my technique since then, changing recipes and materials, but have always stuck with the same themes. Whimsical animals, gargoyles and aliens make everyone chuckle and in their own way, are entertainment in and of themselves.

Alien
Frisker
Seaworld
Angeline
Dogone It!
Seymore (he still serves as mascot in my studio)
Guitar Cat (One of my earliest sculptures)
Rock On!
Funky Chicken
Kookybirds
Giraffe
Swiss Aliens (done in honor of Monroe, WI "Cheese Days" festival in 2006
Waterbird

Most of the sculptures shown have already been sold, but custom work is always available to order. Though no two pieces are ever alike, if you see something you are interested in, a similar theme can be created. Return to the HOME page for my contact information or check here for pieces still available.
